# Former Policeman Arrested for Stealing Mobile Phones from Devotees at Kannur Temples

**Kannur:** A former policeman who was dismissed from service has been arrested in connection with the theft of mobile phones kept outside temples by devotees while entering for worship. The arrested person has been identified as Vipin Kumar, 39, of Vellora Matham, Annur, Payyanur. Police said he had previously been involved in theft cases and other allegations, following which he was dismissed from the force.

The thefts were reported at the Rajarajeshwara Temple, Thrikkambaram Sree Krishna Temple and Payyanur Subrahmanya Swamy Temple. According to the police, mobile phones were allegedly taken from the pockets of shirts that devotees had removed and left outside while entering the temples.

Police had registered cases in connection with the theft of a mobile phone worth Rs 27,000 belonging to Sajin Mohanan of Chittarikkal Alayil Padinjare Veettil, who had arrived for darshan at the Rajarajeshwara Temple, as well as the theft reported at the Payyanur temple.

Police examined CCTV footage from the temples and, according to the investigation team, identified Vipin Kumar as the person allegedly involved in the thefts. He was arrested from Thrikkambaram yesterday morning. The stolen phones were also recovered.

CCTV footage was also reportedly obtained showing money being taken from an open donation box near the entrance of the Thrikkambaram Temple.

Vipin Kumar joined the police force in 2010. He was dismissed from service after allegedly failing to report for duty regularly and becoming involved in allegations and cases. At the time he faced disciplinary action, he was serving in the Railway wing in Kasaragod.

The investigation was conducted under the leadership of DySP T.P. Sumesh, Inspector Srihari and SI P.G. Samson. The arrest was carried out under the leadership of SI P.G. Samson.
